ADVENT SUNDAY Advent is the beginning of the Church Year for most churches in the Western tradition. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas day, which is the Sunday nearest November 30, and ends on Christmas Eve. If Christmas Eve is a Sunday, it is counted as the fourth Sunday of Advent. Beginning of Advent this year is November 27 when we also decorate the Sanctuary which is commonly referred to as "A Service for the Hanging of the Christmas Green". This is accomplished as we await with watchfulness and increasing joy as the birth of Jesus approaches. We light a candle that is placed on a round wreath, the wreath symbolizing eternity of life without end, and the candles remind us that Jesus is the light of the world. We light a candle on each of the four Sundays of Advent. As the light grows, so does our anticipation and joy.
Classes and locations are listed on the Main Page.
Most everyone would agree that Sunday School is important for our children. But remember, adults, Sunday School is the one school that no one ever graduates from. Sunday School is something that we should all take more seriously and make a priority. Join us this Sunday and study for the final.
Sunday Morning Service at 10:30 a.m.
After a few hymns and a time of greeting your
neighbor, a communion mediation will be offered and the communion trays will
be passed to those desiring to partake. As is our custom, we hold the loaf
and cup and partake in unison. Following the communion, offering plates will
be passed through the congregation. Please do not feel embarrassed, this
is our way of receiving the tithes and offerings each week. The scripture
text
for the sermon is read, then a prayer followed by the sermon.
Shady Grove's Sunday Night Worship Services, set to resume July 1st, are geared to be more traditional. Unlike our Youth service, there will be an organist, a pianist, and hymnals will be used. The service starts at 6:30pm. Which ever way you prefer to praise the Lord, we have a service for you!
Every second Sunday of the month there is a men's breakfast in the Fellowship Hall at 7:30am. If you want to help cook, show up at 7:00am. Some times there is a brief devotion, the time is mainly for fellowship. Come and "hang" with the guys!
FIRST THURSDAY
Elders meet in the Church Office at 6:30 p.m.
What should you expect if you come to Bible Service? We open with prayer, then there is a 15-25 minute talk given by our guest, Jerald Hamby. After that we have a discussion time. We meet in the Fellowship Hall at 6:30 PM. Bible Service is cancelled on Fellowship Dinner night.
A Youth Bible Study is also provided during this hour. Not only will this give you the opportunity to come but also bring your children with you.
FOOD PANTRY
A food program to help the needy in the community. Its dates of operation are the first and third Wednesdays of each month. From 8:00 to 10:00 AM.
Come at 6:30 PM and show off your favorite dish (or
dishes), but don't feel pressured to
bring
something--just come and enjoy the fellowship and food. It's the best potluck
supper in Alabama! Good Food, Good People, Good Fun!. This is a good time to
meet other members of the church. Remember the old saying, "Make new friends
and keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold". This is a good time to
make new friends, and visit with some of your old friends too!
All normal Wednesday night activities are cancelled on Fellowship Dinner Night.
